South Korea will provide training for Mongolian medical professionals from next week as part of a bilateral project to strengthen Mongolia’s healthcare system.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said Friday that the program will support Mongolia’s goal of training 1,000 doctors and other healthcare workers.

The initiative follows a training agreement signed by the two countries in March.

Under the pilot program, six Mongolian medical professionals will train at medical facilities in South Korea for four weeks starting Monday.

The program shifts the focus from training individuals to strengthening multidisciplinary teamwork, with an emphasis on cancer care and heart transplants — two areas of high demand in Mongolia.

South Korea also agreed to support training for staff at Mongolia’s planned second national cancer center, a priority project for the Mongolian government.

The initiative was discussed at the seventh meeting of the Korea-Mongolia intergovernmental consultative body, jointly held in Seoul on Friday by the two countries’ health ministries.

The meeting was based on a revised memorandum of understanding on healthcare and medical cooperation signed in July.

Other areas of cooperation include digital technology and pharmaceutical supply chains.

The ministries aim to support the digital transformation of Mongolia’s healthcare system, improve drug safety and help Korean pharmaceutical and biotech companies take part in Mongolia’s public procurement of essential medicines.
